Augustin Ernoult

Researcher in musical acoustics

I'm researcher in acoustics, member of the team Makutu from Inria. My speciality is the musical acoustics and more specificaly, the study of wind instruments.

I try to link the manufacture of an instrument (e.g. its geometry) and the sound produced when it is played by a musician. To do that I use acoustics models and their numerical transcription.

The developpment of numerical tools to support instrument manufactur is one possible application of my research.

Bellow, a list of topics on which I worked (more details and illustrations in french in section research):

  • the control of the attack transients of flute-like instruments during my Ph.D.
  • the control of the pressure inside the bag of the bagpipe
  • modeling the acoustic wave propagation inside the body of the instruments
  • the automatic design of woodwind instruments by using optimization algorithms
  • the comparison of french and german bassons

A part of my current activity is dedicated to the development of the free open software Openwind, a python library which computing the acoustic properties of wind instruments.

In addition of academic collaboration, I work regularly with manufacturers (e.g.: Buffet Cramoon or Humeau Factory).
